All over the Internet you’ll find information on how to write a press release. Some of it is good. Most of it is terrible. Virtually all of that information misses an enormously important point about publicity.

If all you do is learn how to write a press release, you’re completely wasting your time. The reason is simple.

Once you learn how to write a press release, what are you going to do with it?

Do you know how to distribute it?

Do you know who to distribute it to?

Do you know how to respond to media people who follow up on your press release?

Do you know the right way to distribute it using social networking?

Do you know how to get your press release to #1 on Google News?

Perhaps most importantly, do you know how to turn your press release and your publicity into dollars in the bank? Do you know how to turn your publicity into new customers, more sales, a bigger stronger business?

For the vast majority of people, the answers to all of those questions is an emphatic “NO”.

So almost everyone who only learns how to write a press release doesn’t know what to do next and how to do it. So their attempt to get publicity fails…and then they blame publicity. They say publicity doesn’t work. They say publicity is a waste of time.

Most sadly, they give up on the most powerful skill they will ever learn in their lives.

It would be like me teaching you how to buy a motorcycle. If you don’t know how to ride a motorcycle, what good have I done? I may even have done something dangerous because you may buy a motorcycle, try to ride it, not know how and get pretty banged up.

Publicity has given me everything I could possibly want in life. Not because I simply learned how to write a press release, but because I took the time and made the effort to learn the whole system.

The one thing publicity has given me that I cherish most is my freedom. I can work when I want. I can go where I want. I can take the day off and play with my dogs. I can take a week off and play with my dogs.

I recently started using Twitter. It’s been one of the most powerful marketing tools I’ve ever used. Again, not simply because I’m using Twitter, but because I took the time to learn how to use it to grow my business, to make more sales and to increase profits.

Every single day I see posts on Twitter linking to a web page that offers information about how to write a press release.

Then what??? These websites leave people hanging. Even worse, they lead people to believe that once they learn how to write a press release, they’re all ready to run out and get free publicity.

Sorry, Skippy, it doesn’t work that way.

Now what? What do you do next?

If you want to learn how to get free publicity and how to get the maximum value out of that publicity, learn more than just how to write a press release. Learn the right way to get free publicity.

If you want to get a strong start on Twitter, learn how to use Twitter to grow your business.

Hi Paul – my experiences are very similar; as an expert on business marketing through speaking and seminars, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard “oh, I tried doing some speaking and seminars but they just didn’t work for me / my business / my industry” I’d have a giant room full of nickels.

They’re right; seminars and speaking don’t work – YOU MAKE them work. These days I have very little patience for those who think they can do one speaking engagement or one seminar and retire rich, or save their business from years of neglect, poor management, or the brink of bankruptcy.

Paul, I know you get that too – people come to you saying “save my business” or “publicity didn’t work for me”.

Baloney. I’ve used your publicity system to get publicity when I want to get it, and I’ve seen spikes in web traffic and sales as the result.

I COULD say that your publicity system works, and I’d be right. But perhaps more accurately, it only works IF I do what you say to do!

    Best,
    David Portney

    Paul,

I just wanted to thank you for the report “get your press release to #1 on Google News”.

I did what it said and within an hour I was in the top 5 of Google News for all three of my keywords!

I didn’t stay on the first page of Google web-search for longer than one day for each individual keyword, however for keyword combination’s … I have!

Once again thank you very much.

I will continue to put together press releases following your process.

    Sincerely,
